Starting on the East Coast of the United States, the Interstate 10 Corridor begins in Jacksonville, Florida, which is just 40 miles to the north of Saint Augustine Fla.
Do you like golf? Jacksonville, Florida is home to more than 50 golf courses, within a 20-mile drive from downtown Jacksonville.
Do you like football? The Jacksonville Jaguars NFL Football team is Florida’s third NFL franchise team, after the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Even college football is a big deal in Jacksonville, which has hosted the Gator Bowl since 1946. These days it is called the Konica Minolta Gator Bowl, in recognition of its sponsor, Konica Minolta. Florida’s three major college football teams - Florida State, Florida and Miami - and the Georgia Bulldogs each have a large fan base in the Jacksonville area.
How about a cruise? There are at least 14 different cruise packages available launching from Jacksonville ports.
How about a wine tasting festival? There are a few wine tasting events in Jacksonville each year.
But, what if you have kids?
The Museum of Science and History is open every day of the year, except for major holidays: Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. It is fun and educational for the whole family.
The Jacksonville Museum of Modern Art has in its collection almost 800 works of art, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, and photography, created from the 1960’s to the modern age. The MOSH also has a planetarium available, where they invite school groups and the public to visit for a tour of the night sky.
The Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens has 6,000 objects in its permanent collection. This museums claim to fame is its highly regarded collection of European masters and American impressionists, a world-renowned collection of 18th century Meissen porcelain, and more than two-and-one half acres of historic gardens along the St. Johns River.
The Jacksonville Maritime Museum has artifacts dating back to the early French expeditions into the area, into the modern day of shipping.
If your kids like seeing animals, try a trip to the Jacksonville Zoo.
When I used to live in the area, my favorite destination in all of the Jacksonville Metro area was Jacksonville Beach. Local beaches include Jacksonville Beach. Neptune Beach. Atlantic Beach. Ponte Vedra. and Mayport.
Although there was never a real military fort on the St. John’s River mouth, there was an outpost equipped with big guns to protect the entrances to the Florida inland waterways during the American Civil War. Visit the Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park to learn more.
